Space Center Houston
Space Center Houston is less than 15 minutes away from Orchard Park, and it’s a stop not to be missed if you’re in the area! This museum of science and technology is also the official visitor center of NASA Johnson Space Center. The large educational complex features real artifacts from some of NASA’s actual missions to space, educational exhibits, and interactive experiences. The museum is popular, so we recommend buying timed-entry tickets online in advance. Space Center Houston is truly a remarkable experience for people of all ages.
Armand Bayou Nature Center
Nature lovers are sure to love Armand Bayou Nature Center in nearby Pasadena, Texas. There are over 5 miles of paved walking trails that are great for seniors, and offer views of bison and other native animals, as well as more than 200 species of birds. It’s located along the Central Flyway, the largest migratory bird route in North America, so you can see many species of birds as they migrate seasonally. It’s also the largest urban wilderness preserve in the United States! Explore the wide variety of well-maintained trails here.
Hang Out at the Beach
Orchard Park is located within a half an hour of dozens of beaches. Our favorites for seniors include Stewart Beach, a family-friendly beach in Galveston. Free beach wheelchair rentals are available, the waves are gentle, and you can also rent a chair and umbrella–no need to lug heavy gear around. Sunny Beach is another great choice–you can park on the beach, so it’s great for seniors who aren’t interested in a long walk from the car. Just make sure you have all-wheel drive, for optimal safety. The beach is wide and pet-friendly, with great places to eat nearby.
For a curated, privately owned beach experience, try Porretto Beach! On-the-sand parking, beach chair and umbrella rentals, and food and drink delivery available are just a few of the perks. It’s like your own personal resort, just 30 minutes from Orchard Park.
Whenever you’re visiting the beach, make sure to remember a few safety precautions. Skin cancer is common, especially among older adults, so wear sunscreen, bring a hat, and take advantage of umbrella rentals. Plan to visit beaches earlier in the morning or later in the evening if you wish to enjoy crowds. And, of course, the Texas heat can be brutal during the summertime, so make sure to stay hydrated.

They are a small business, so check their website for hours and availability. Craft 96 Draft House, also in League City, has a full restaurant menu as well as 65 taps of craft beers and a lengthy wine list. This is a popular and highly rated local spot, but it maintains a smaller, quieter feel. For wine, consider Clear Creek Vineyard in nearby Kemah, Texas. Clear Creek Vineyard is a beautiful location with incredible ambiance and a gorgeous tasting room and lounge.
