Shopping
Colorado Springs is known for its locally-owned shops and high-end boutiques. These are a few highly rated venues that you and your loved ones might enjoy.
- Downtown Colorado Springs features a variety of boutiques, specialty shops, and galleries that will be a hit for all ages. Don’t miss Cacao Chemistry, Poor Richard’s (books, unique gifts, and toys), or The Candy Bar!
- Old Colorado City offers an eclectic mix of unique shops and eateries. We love The British Pantry & Tea Room, Eclectic Co, Eve’s Revolution, and Sweetwater Flower Market.
- The Promenade Shops at Briargate is a luxury outdoor mall with upscale stores and restaurants. Retailers include Fjallraven, Chico’s, Columbia, Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, and many more. Locals say Briargate is perfect for seniors who want to walk and talk (and shop), and it’s also wheelchair accessible!
Arts & Entertainment
There’s no shortage of art and entertainment options near Bear Creek Assisted & Senior Living in Colorado Springs.
- Downtown Colorado Springs, one of our favorite shopping destinations, is a great place to walk and wander, with cafes, ice cream shops, bookstores, and local art. The First Friday Art Walk, held on the first Friday of each month, features new art, live music, and special events.
- The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum is great for seniors, grandkids, and athletes of all ages. It’s very accessible, with interactive exhibits and informative guided tours.
- Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum has daily free admission for everyone, which is truly unique among modern-day museums. The building itself is a work of art, and includes lots of local history. They also have regular events, performances, and special programs.
- Manitou Springs, just 10 minutes from Bear Creek, has a quaint downtown with mineral springs, spas, hiking, and some great museums. The Ghost Town Museum and Miramont Castle are a few can’t-miss destinations!
Outdoor Recreation
- For adventurous souls, Manitou and Cog Railway offers a unique way to see the Pikes Peak Summit. Enjoy views unlike anywhere else in the world, with a warm, seated indoor experience suitable for all mobility levels. While the experience itself is available to everyone, please note that the altitude at the summit is 14,115 feet, which could cause lightheadedness and dizziness. Keep this in mind if you’re sensitive to altitude changes, or not accustomed to high altitudes.
- At Garden of the Gods, a National Natural Landmark, you can view red rock formations, grasslands, woodlands, and mountain views, all in one place. A wheelchair- and stroller- friendly paved trail, Jeep tours (even a wheelchair-accessible Jeep!), trolley tours, and an accessible Visitor’s Center mean anyone can enjoy this remarkable destination.
- You’re never too old for a day at the zoo. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, America’s highest zoo, has interactive exhibits and amazing views. Please note the zoo does have some steep walkways that could pose a challenge. The zoo is wheelchair-accessible and rents both push wheelchairs and a limited number of motorized scooters for those who need a little extra support.
- Broadmoor Seven Falls has scenic walking trails and–as you may expect– waterfalls. The falls are best enjoyed on foot, but the trail is under a mile in length, paved, and has only a mild incline. If you want to get to the top of the falls, however, you’ll have to travel up 224 steps! A Mountain Elevator is available to the Bird’s Nest Platform for those who aren’t able to make the journey. At night, the waterfalls are beautifully lit with colorful lights.
- Bear Creek Regional Park is literally right across the street from Bear Creek Senior Living. This park has well-maintained trails, beautiful scenery, a nature center, and a community garden.
